The Rockford Fosgate P1s4 12 is a cost-effective package of two punch-type subwoofers with no enclosing case.

This is not the cheapest set you can get, but it does come in at a price that won’t break the bank.

Performance

  • Size: 10 inches
  • RMS: 250 watts
  • Peak: 500 watts

Punch-type subwoofers have been around since the eighties. Unlike some of the more questionable trends during that era, these have proven that they have staying power.

They are as perfect for listening to the Bangles back then, (were we ever that young?) as they are for listening to rap or rock, or whatever you like now.

They deliver top-notch sound and will rock you and your passengers. (If you don’t at least play the Bohemian Rhapsody once, there is definitely something very wrong with you.)

The speakers are built to last, with spider venting on the outside and a high-temperature voice coil on the inside to reduce the build-up of heat.

The tinsel leads have been stretched to ensure that they are more reliable and able to withstand more fatigue. They are shock-resistant.

The design incorporates the patented Vast tech ensuring that you are able to much better performance with a smaller set of speakers.

Features

These speakers provide exceptional power, especially when you consider the cost. The manufacturers have built a sterling reputation for themselves, and have become a trusted brand in the auto-stereo industry.

The cones have a much wider surface area free because of the Vast tech – this patented process is only used by Rockford Fosgate. It is this technology that allows for the exceptional sound quality.

It is recommended that you use a standard enclosure with these, but there is a lot of room for customization thanks to the innovative slides on the basket. The screws to secure the speakers can be attached anywhere along the slide allowing you to choose the optimal placement and angle.

The manufacturers have also taken a more novel approach to dissipating heat. They have used an anodized aluminum voice coil in place of the standard plastic that most other companies use. This makes it possible for the coil to assist in dissipating the heat that may build up when used.

Drawbacks

These are a good set to have, but they are more geared towards beginners. The power handling is not high enough for these to be considered in the same league as the more serious models, so they are not going to win you any prizes in a competition.

That said, they also don’t come with the very steep price tag you would see with more powerful models.  They work extremely well and have more than enough output for a bass-head.

They are elegantly designed, durable and reliable – basically, everything that you want in a hard-working little package. More than this is pretty much overkill.

Final Verdict

Okay, so you are not going to turn heads with this if you come up against really serious car people. But the performance offered by these speakers is pretty amazing considering that they come in at a lower price point. If you are looking for something more serious, be sure to check out our top 10 list of our favorite Rockford Subwoofers.

They are a good fit for anyone looking to up the bass setting and enjoy some really powerful music.
